Penman's Pooches: Where It All Began

Penman's Pooches: Where It All Began

A love of dogs and a passion for photography came together to form a project called Penman's Pooches. Find out how it all started.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love dogs. I am that crazy dog lady who stops people in the street just so she can say hi to their dog, and I'm not at all ashamed to say so!

A busy lifestyle means that I can't have a dog of my own, but I've always thought it would be fun to take some photos of people's pets. I just didn't know how to get started. That was, of course, until this year.

Aside from photography, I'm also a keen runner. This year, I had hoped to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon for the second year in a row but had missed out on a ballot spot, which left me the option of opting for a charity place. I was unsure about this - I certainly didn't have £300 of my own money to give to the charity just so I could run, I had already taken advantage of the generosity of my friends and family the previous year when I raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support, and I felt bad asking for sponsorship for a half marathon when only recently I had completed a full marathon! But that was when my friend suggested that I combine my love for dogs, my passion for photography, and my half marathon ambitions, all in aid of an animal charity. And so Penman's Pooches was born.

Over the course of a few weeks, I set up photoshoots with friends and family members (and even a few friends of friends too!) who were keen to have their four-legged friends photographed for a good cause. I was offering an afternoon photoshoot, complete with a digital library of high-res images, in return for a small donation to Battersea. I think I might have enjoyed it more than anyone. Unfortunately, midway through my fundraising, COVID-19 saw the cancellation of my race and pushed the pause button on my fundraising.
